DIY Bicycle Care ....Old Bike Blog and RidingPretty ..Series Intro

thom big

My New Guest Blogger: Thom at Old Bike Blog

I know a lot of you are buying vintage or want to, but don’t really know what goes into taking care of your bicycle, let alone refurbish it …and alas may live somewhere, where bicycle community offered bicycle repair/care/ maintenance classes don’t exist. And getting your bicycle work done at your local LBS (local bicycle shop) could be an option but you’d rather DIY and save some cash and be independent

SO….Ta DAH!!!!!

I'm pleased to announce a new periodic feature here on RidngPretty, written by Thom from Old Bike Blog. Thom will be guest-blogging about bicycle care basics and fixing-up your old (or new) bike. Learn basic tasks, starting at the beginning … like changing tires and tubes, adjusting saddle and handlebar height…Then progress and learn about chain care, brake maintenance, and lots more. With your confidence growing from these newly learned skills, progress to even more DIY bicycle knowledge! With Thom’s help you take on the more advanced skills… Just TRUST that with Old Bike Blog’s help that you can proudly refurbish your old bicycle into the real beauty you know your bicycle can be!

I'll be be guest-blogging at Old Bike Blog in exchange. I’ll be giving tips on green products and methods for cleaning and yes even refurbishing your bicycle with eco/green products.

And As Thom at Old Bike Blog said:

"Both features will be aimed at helping new cyclists get to work on that old Schwinn or Huffy that's been collecting dust in the garage, but more experienced gear-heads might benefit too."

So, watch this space over the coming weeks for Thom’s guest posts, and check out Old Bike Blog for bike care basics.

A Short Film About Love.

This is a painting Danny Roberts did right when was starting out doing art.

SO a few weeks ago i saw a movie by my favorite director Krzysztof Kieślowski,
it was Called " A short Film About Love" and i have to say, it's one of the most brilliant and interesting movies i've seen in i can't remember how long.
It's definitely unlike any Love story you have every seen... haha
Though it was really different, for some reason, i could really relate to it.
Not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing? haha
Not sure why i'm posting about it.
But i was sitting and drawing and listening to music today,
and a sort of cheesy sappy love song came on, and it made me start thinking about how there are stereo typical imagery when the word "Love" is mentioned generally.
For example, i think of a big heart floating in the air, haha
but when each of us thinks of love in terms that apply to us, we picture a whole other set of images, and these aren't generic at all, they're specific to us and our dreams and experiences... i don't know, i was thinking about that yesterday and cracking up because when i thought about it, the most random sequence of images popped in my head.

So i was thinking as a little homework assignment to you all,
since I'm definitely a person that likes telling stories through images,
i thought it would be interesting to have yawl post two images that remind you of love. Not generic love, but your personal version of it...

i don't know, you don't have to if you don't want to.. wow this is a quiet the rambling post... i should probably go to bed now. hahaha

oh p.s. the picture is a 5ft painting i did 3-4 years ago.

P.s.s. Miss Sophie Ward wrote a really nice post on me today. She posted alot of my the drawing i did of her with the matching picture i drew off of. it's really interesting to see them side by side. if you want to check it out, CLICK HERE

A Little Dazed & Confused

This is Artist Danny Roberts Cover Version for London Based Dazed and Confused Magazine Cover Version Contest

Well, well, well, the day starts and we are already off working.
Good morning! How are you all doing today?
Me? I'm doing good, gearing up to get alot of things done today.
Also, been contemplating a little dilemma.
Business or Clothes?
I can't decide. For the last two years i haven't really bought any clothes, (which is kinda funny being a fashion illustrator. hah)
cause i've been investing constantly in things of a business nature,
(Art supplies, Prints, Cameras, etc.)
I think i still have one more major purchase, but alas i find my clothes starting to dissolve. hah.
Quite the Dilemma, huh?

Well anyways, the post today is the Cover i did for the Dazed and Confused Cover Versions Contest.
The contest ends today.
In the past, i've been super anxious for competitions, hoping, wishing, and praying i win.
But always, to no avail... there are so many Factors in Art Competitions that i think i will just chill, haha.
Plus, i don't really meet the requirements; i'm not under 18,
but i'm hoping they're going to forgive me being 5 years older. hahah
Well, i hope you like it.

Wow, I'm rambling, but p.s., Check out Sophie's Blog post today.
At the end of it, she posted this story she told me when she was staying here.
It's incredible! It consists of Her, Her godfather, Prince Charles, Sting, and Sir Ian McKellan in a Castle!
Come on! How could you resist that! hahaah. It's good. :)

{it's beautiful here}

Lately have been coming across beautiful "handwritten" words across walls as art, in warm and wonderful messages such as "it's beautiful here" {above} and "And I Love You" {below}, and love the idea of being always inspired by favourite words and phrases . . .

The piece {above} is a neon wall sculpture by Tracey Emin, installed above a photograph by Darren Almond and an incredible glass box filled with gold leaf that sits on the coffee table, from David Gill Galleries.

where is the weekend?!?!

my motto for the day

Unmitigated Gal … 2009 Fashion Calendar

troll sm

'Give a Gift Both Ways’ with this 2009 Fashion Calendar. This is a great gift to give, plus it benefits Jacquie Phelan. She’s surviving cancer.

The calendar is all vintage themed and features Jacquie Phelan, the legendary mountain bike champ. Though don’t look for mountain bike racing photos… au contraire!.. She’s dressed with aplomb, wit, and in fabulous style for each of the 12 months.

unmitigated gal small

I just love this photo too. Jacquie also has a blog. I think it is so worth checking out for this amazing perspective from a woman who has lots to say, and has pioneered in so many ways. Go find out for yourself and start with ‘the about JP’ if you aren’t familiar with who she is. Also check out Wombats.

You can find Jacquie’s calendar here and Jacquie’s blog here.

It reminds me of summers when i was a little lad.
Hope you all are having an amazing week.

P.S. To those who have emailed or commented questions, i haven't forgotten about you.
i've been working non stop lately, but once i finish up, i shall respond! Sorry about that. ;)

Well in the last post,
i got a request to post a bigger version of one of the images in the Vision magazine post.
So here it is; hope you like it.

Cycle Chic Fashion Show ....Video

Yes, the video from the Cycle Chic Fashion is now available for your viewing pleasure. I'm including it here as the YouTube Video for your simplest convenience. You can also view it here at the Cycle Chic website. Good sound clips in the video about what bicycling and fashion can mean. “Cycling is fun and easy… elegant way to get around…shows how good people look on bikes.” AND if someone tells you that fashion and bicycling mixing it up together is only a 'trend', then they haven’t been paying attention to all the media swirl with countless bicycle/cycle chic references either in images or actual words.

16.11.08 // LONDON // Who's Got My Baby Arm? (Baby You Ate It!) / Shoreditch / Dalston

{a new week + silver pendants}

Once had dinner in an ultra-cool, very modern restaurant with an enormous silver dome lighting fixture above its high-gloss serving bar. Encountered this dramatic lighting once again, last summer, at The Glass House, a beautiful hotel in Edinburgh, where the extravagantly sized fixture hung above a warm and wonderful circular fireplace surrounded by luxurious seating. Discovered the lighting again at another hotel, this time in New York, at The Hudson.

Love the way these pendants look in dining areas, warmed up with soft pillows on banquets, against hints of colour and the grain of wood.
