'Cycle Chic' ...a Definition of

So here we have it. It is official.

Cycle chic
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A term that describes the culture of everyday cycling in fashionable clothes. It is generally associated with the utility cycling practised in cities such as Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Berne, Basle, Berlin, among others, where citizens practice a high level of bicycle usage. In many European cities, as well as cities in China and Japan, cycling is an everyday transport choice and many cyclists choose to wear their regular clothes, as opposed to outfits generally associated with cycle sport, such as bicycle shorts, gloves and shoes.

Cycle chic is now a growing trend in cities that are investing in bicycle friendly infrastructure and facilities. With the growing popularity of community bicycle programs, citizens are discovering that it is possible to ride in their normal clothes around town.

Super Models on Bicycles OR ‘Don’t Hate Me ‘Cause I’m Beautiful’ (as she rides on the wrong side of the street)!

You’ve got to read the whole article in The New York Observer.

‘Meet the beautiful bicycle girls of New York, a breed that bears little resemblance to the hard-charging, Spandex-short-wearing species of 20 years ago. Those women were athletes, pumping the pedals, fighting to win. Getting somewhere. Today’s girls—and one always thinks of them as girls, even if they’re well into their 40’s—are more meandering, their long legs flashing along the pot-holed alleys of SoHo and the boutique-lined bike lanes of the West Village. Eco-conscious and ethereal, they wear flowing frocks and gigantic sunglasses but never helmets. Their hair flutters in the breeze as they leave a trail of swooning male pedestrians in their perfumed wake. They’ve been known to weave up the Brooklyn Bridge, holding up traffic as they absent-mindedly chomp on almonds, steering through a stop sign while texting on their BlackBerries.’

After which, especially read the response banter that this article generated... outstanding and from all points of view.

Afraid of Traffic and Cars?.... most women are!

‘The number one reason that women don't ride bikes is... CARS! Not that cars are so much easier, but rather, women said they don't feel safe sharing the road with them. A full 80% of respondents didn't, according to our recently completed Low-Income Women and Bicycling Survey Project. Also, 63% said they would consider riding a bicycle if there were bike lanes in their neighborhood.'

“Why Aren’t Women On Wheels?”

CARS…This was my excuse for the longest time. It took a lot of desire on my part to get over it (the fear). I did. Now I can’t encourage women enough to ask themselves just what is it that keeps them from riding a bicycle more often?

Recently, P. {dashing as ever in Versace} and I had the chance to attend a gallery opening for a well-known British artist, and while we were sipping our wine and admiring the work in the bright and lovely gallery space, remembered how wonderful art looks against a clean, white background . . .

CG Fashion Forward High Style

To get your bicycle chic style inspiration on and your juices going take a look at this (May 9, 2007) Fashion Show. Wine and Bicycle Chic ..I love It!

Here’s a quote from William Leigon-- President, Hahn Estates/Cycles Gladiator Wine

"We wanted to do something to help promote cycling and riding a bike to work. The name of our wine is Cycles Gladiator, and what we wanted to show that you don't have to be inhibited and worry about wearing spandex that's tight and lumpy and that kind of stuff...that we could create fashion that was chic. Fashion that showed the freedom of movement and could be exciting and creative for people today to ride their bikes to work."

Shopper’s Alert: THE Best Bicycle Chic Product Finds

I’ve culled an amazing assortment of bicycle chic products for you to savor and take a look at.

You get a photo of the product, the price, my editorialized description of the product and (in most cases) a direct link to the ‘buy it now’ button …and then it’s yours!

I’ve listed almost 30 products (and growing) in lots of categories. Things with prices ranging from $5.00 bicycle ankle cuffs to $$$ for Parisian Hotel accommodations which includes an incredible chic bicycle plus bicycle valet service.

My dilemma. I debated a long time if I wanted to showcase these products on this blog. I’ve been saving my best finds forever! I decided to make it simple; visually organized, easy, appealing and really handy for you.

Some categories I’ve listed; bicycles, bicycles skirts, helmets, gloves, baskets, basket liners, bags, jackets, goggles, steamers, bells, and more!

Enjoy…

Why DO You Want To Take My Photo? …

She asked. And I answered ...because I love your flowers.
