{table for two: le petit déjeuner | breakfast}

img162
monday morning: toasted pistachio and honey yogurt

. . . after sunday's luxuriously languid ways, monday mornings are often a whirlwind of flying clothes and pretty mary janes, {and this morning}, finally settling on a long pleated skirt and side-swept bangs fastened with glittery barrette, with only enough time for a very strong french coffee -- and must confess -- often miss breakfast . . . but if there were time in the morning, there would most definitely be {at the very least} a mango smoothie or, even better, toasted pistachio & honey yogurt, but, happily, on the weekends, there is always time for sunday brunch . . .

{always elegant: classic camellias}

soon-it-will-be-spring
msw-cake

. . . have always thought that cake and champagne are perfect anytime, especially for unexpected occasions -- the near arrival of spring, saint patrick's day, or a sunny thursday in mid-march -- and especially if the champagne is vintage and the cake is tiers of pink fondant trimmed with royal icing, beautifully topped, of course, with wonderfully vibrant and beathtakingly lovely camellias . . .

{a glossary of rose fragrances}

spring-things-header

glossary2

. . . at this moment, there are beautiful bouquets of roses everywhere, creating a perfumed oasis with a million softly luxurious scents lingering in the air, and during these moments, am reminded of martha stewart's glossary or rose fragrances -- there are modern roses and climbing roses, hybrid tea roses and old garden roses, and whether light or heady, vanilla or musk, always fascinating to read about the different varieties, and about how each rose's scent varies with the weather and time of day, strongest on mild and somewhat humid mornings, and fading or changing as the hours pass by . . .

{p.s.} what is your favourite scent -- fresh, floral, spicy, sexy . . . ? and you have a signature scent?

. . . have featured the beautiful work of barcelona photographers bela adler & salvador fresneda many times before, and every time, swept away all over again, and since always adore finding party inspiration in weddings, for this year's holiday soirées, it's perfect shades of winter white and pink champagne bows on sky-high peep toes, seafoam satin opera gloves and sheer jackets strewn with roses, and most of all, tiffany's blue bows that fall just below the collarbone . . .

{holiday inspiration: gold flatware}

linea-gold-flatware

... after a weekend spent on cozy velvet cushions in front of the fireplace, dinner reservations and shopping, and a countryside dinner party on sunday evening {homemade french onion soup and chicken & bacon pies} things are beginning to feel wonderfully festive . . . and since have been on the topic of tabletop inspiration, could not think of anything more beautiful for the holidays
than gold flatware {although must confess, adore gold any time of year}, and am positively smitten with the italian-made brushed gold linea ice oro five piece setting {above} and the insanely elegant and ultra-stylish midas golden cutlery set {below} from the conran shop . . .

{holiday hair how-to: the side chignon}

side-chignon3

. . . for late lunch dates and last-minute meetings, it's been mostly chic & messy topknots, and sometimes, even, a classic chignon -- but as the holiday invitations begin to pile up, something a little more sophisticated is in order for those elegant dinner parties filled with sparkling crystal champagne flutes and conversations that last long after the crème brulée has been served -- and of course, the perfect solution is the always lovely side chignon . . .

side-chignon1

{one}
using a round brush, blow-dry hair smooth and straight, focusing on the top sections

{two}
once dry, use a large-barrel curling iron to create waves from the ears down

{three}
build height and volume at the crown by teasing hair gently with a fine-tooth comb

{four}
gather hair into a low ponytail; twist it along the nape of your neck, pinning as you go

{five}
once you reach your ear, shape the remaining hair into curls, and pin them back over

{six}
red, red lips and platform peeptoes and you're set!

{p.s.} previous how-to's:
* a classic english hand-tied bouquet
* a driftwood table lamp
* a fun weekend project
* a glamorous guide to champagne

. . . saturday morning was a luxuriously late start, a sunny morning drive and a favourite café utterly filled with charm and round marble tables and crimson umbrellas, walkways strewn with brightly fallen leaves and a breathtaking view overlooking the still-green parks and cityscape beyond, while inside, glittering antique chandeliers, flaky butter tarts and frothy lattes; and best of all, there's still time for the sound of leaves beneath tall leather boots and for perfect kisses under pale october skies . . .

hope you're in the midst of a stunningly lovely weekend & that it's beautiful where you are,

. . . the last day of august and how it has arrived so quickly is a mystery, and while the early morning air has become a little cooler, the sun still shines warmly and whether it's ribbons or tulle, stripes on a chair or a soft cashmere sweater, whether in shades of monticello or azalea, somehow, the last days of summer always feels like pink . . .

. . . was absolutely delighted to be included in martha stewart's best of the blogs: editors' picks in september 2008 when {this is glamorous} had barely just begun . . . and now, nearly two years later, have just discovered that this blog has been included in the september {print!} issue of martha stewart living, as one of the ms decorating editors' favorite blogs to bookmark! such a wonderful, unimaginably beautiful year it has been . . .

thanks so much for coming along with me,
